About Chris Hamilton

Chris helps companies to develop Health & Safety management systems. His recent work includes policies, risk assessments, COSHH assessments and process hazard reviews (HAZOP studies, etc). He also develops Environmental Management systems (EMS) for registration to the ISO14001 international standard and manages applications for IPC and IPPC authorisation. Chris is a qualified auditor for both Quality and Environmental Management Systems.

History

Chris studied Electrical Engineering at Southampton University before taking up a post in the Development team at Philips Semiconductor (formerly Mullards) in Southampton. He spent many years in various engineering activities, closely associated with the development of semiconductor device manufacture, culminating in the the position of Senior Product Engineer for the IC plant making Teletext and Compact Disc data processing chips.

Chris moved to East Anglia in 1989, taking a job with the fledgling BT&D Technologies, first in Wafer Fabrication and later in the Quality Management Team, introducing techniques for statistical process control. During this time, Chris also trained in Process Hazard Review techniques (including HAZOP studies) and his use of these techniques contributed significantly to the record of good safety management enjoyed by the company over the years.

Environment

Newly taken over by Hewlett Packard, the company accepted the challenge of Environmental Responsibility and Chris was appointed to the position of Environmental Advisor. He was charged with developing the Environmental Management System (EMS) and managing the Integrated Pollution Control Authorisation. This required a thorough understanding of the complex and potentially hazardous processes at the plant.

ISO14001

With the company under pressure from major international customers, Chris advised management at the Ipswich plant to seek registration to ISO14001, the international standard for environmental management systems. Chris achieved registration for the EMS in 1998, with no non-compliances, and this registration has been maintained ever since. During this period, Chris developed and delivered the environmental awareness training necessary for all the 800 or so employees then at the site. He also prepared the application for a major variation to the IPC authorisation, paving the way for a three-fold increase in the manufacturing capacity.

Chris is now using his expertise in Health and Safety and Environmental Management to help small and medium sized businesses in East Anglia.
